The ways of vocal prayer

Catholic theology distinguishes three levels at which vocal prayer can be made. The attention is either focused on the words, or on the meaning of the words, or directly on the realities of faith itself.

At the first level one’s whole attention is concentrated on the words, with little or no focus on their meaning or on God. It is the sort of vocal prayer that many Dominicans had to practice in the past. On first entering the Order and being confronted with a choral office that was totally in Latin. It took all one’s effort simply to get the words right.

Mary and the Mystery of Salvation: the two dimensions of the Rosary

The Rosary is a Marian devotion. For many people it is through the Rosary that Mary enters into their Christian existence in a conscious way, so much so that when the Rosary is dropped Mary too tends to fade out of their spiritual lives. That in itself is an argument in favour of the Rosary, for if Mary has, as we believe, an objective role to play in the communication of the graces of redemption, this must surely be reflected in some way in our spiritual lives.

It is the recitation of the ‘Hail Marys’ that introduces this Marian dimension.

Depois do Vaticano II, tendíamos a menosprezar a importância da “religiosidade popular”. De forma acertada, demos maior relevância ao estudo bíblico e a uma maior participação na Liturgia. Ao fazê-lo, minimizámos aquelas formas de expressão que permitiam uma grande manifestação de sentimentos religiosos; por exemplo, a exposição do Santíssimo, as procissões, as peregrinações a santuários, devoções rosarianas, etc.
