To hope against all hope

Editorial - September 2014 - N°390

Our theme for the year:
“To hope against all hope” (Rom 4:18)

One day or the other, everyone realizes that life is a journey to the Kingdom of God. But how do we welcome the gift of love and eternal life that God offers to everyone?

Let us examine the conduct of Abraham. God made a promise to Abraham. The latter replied by the obedience of faith. He has confidence in the Word of God despite his questions; and this gives rise to his hope.

Let us now contemplate Mary. She knows the Scriptures of Israel that tell of the hope of salvation, of the promise made to Abraham and his descendants. At Annunciation, Mary receives with faith the words of Angel Gabriel, and answers with a total and definitive "Yes".

By his profound understanding of faith that he received from the Holy Spirit, Saint Paul shows us that Hope is intimately linked with Faith. The promise of salvation is offered to everyone that has been created and personally loved by God. Even though we are sinners, we are forgiven when we repent and abandon ourselves into the arms of the Father, and when we live freely according to the "Gospel of Joy."

On Sunday, September 14, 2014, we will celebrate the Glorious Cross, i.e. the victory of the Resurrection of Christ, who died in giving his life in an incredible love for humanity. Through our faith in the fulfilment of the promise of God, we receive the gift of our own resurrection.

Shall we too, by our trust in God, be sowers of hope for our brothers and sisters?

Since we are fortunate to live in the Church with Mary, let us especially be in spiritual Communion with one another, for the Feast of the Nativity on September 8.
