The Rosary in the Land of Morning Calm

Third stage of the Asian expedition of the General Promoter of the Rosary: South Korea, the “Land of Morning Calm”, from 24 to 28 October 2015. This time it was the sisters of the congregation of the Dominicans of the Most Holy Rosary of Monteils who welcomed him. This congregation, founded as its name indicates, at Monteils in Aveyron in France, is experiencing a renewal of vocations in Asia, Vietnam and notably in South Korea.
A small community of three sisters lives at Seoul and this was the Promoter’s base during his stay. What a joy to meet again sister Marie-Véronique, sister Claire and sister Anne-Élisabeth – alas, only a glimpse of the latter on the first evening, as she was leaving on mission for Cambodia – already encountered on so many occasions in France!

The brief stay in Korea was very busy. The day following arrival, a visit to the Dominican brothers who are based the other side of the huge city that is Seoul.

Then, thanks to several lay people – Juliana, Clara and Veritas – who generously help our sisters different activities were possible. The first concerned the nuns of the monastery of the Mother of God of Baeron. The mass, celebrated in Spanish, was superb thanks to the sisters’ marvellous singing. Afterwards, a meeting was organised with the entire community. The sisters have prepared a map of the world and, each day of the Jubilee, they follow the Pilgrim Rosary on its journey through the monasteries of the Order! We then asked them to sing the Jubilee hymn again which they did perfectly … before posing for the photo below.

We visited two shrines. One erected on a martyr site of Korean Christians, the other, Our Lady of the Rosary of Namyang. This latter shrine, in the middle of a natural setting to which autumn added its splendid colours, is under development: the priest in charge wants to begin the construction of a basilica for the entire Asian continent. In addition he also wishes that we pray in this place to the Virgin Mary to obtain the peaceful reunification of Korea. A huge rosary, composed of large grains of granite, snakes over the whole of the shrine. The faithful pray, at their rhythm, along this chain which links earth and sky.
